MACREDO Meetings

June 2011

The PA Recycling Markets Center (RMC) hosted the MACREDO meeting on June 23-24, 2011 in Middletown, Pennsylvania. Representatives from the Mid-Atlantic states examined current recycling issues and explored opportunities to advance these initiatives. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region III provided funding support for the event. Meeting presentations included:

• RMC's Five Year Performance Report, Robert Bylone, RMC Executive Director, provided report highlights.
• State of Recycling in Virginia -- Steve Coe, Program Coordinator, Recycling & Waste Tire Management, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality
• Project Update -- Linda Knapp, Institute for Local Self-Reliance
• Recycling Wallboard -- Terry Weaver, President, USA Gypsum
• Pharmaceutical Take Back Programs -- Ellen Schmitt, US EPA Region III, Drinking Water Branch
• Plastic Bags -- Kent Foerster, EPA Headquarters, Office of Resource Conservation & Recovery (ORCR)
• Bottle Bills and Packaging Dialogue -- Kent Foerster, EPA Headquarters, Office of Resource Conservation & Recovery (ORCR)

The event included tours of three locations:

• Revolutionary Recovery (Construction Waste Management), led by Avi Golen and Jon Wybar
• Organic Dairy Composting Facility, led by Loren Martin
• Armstrong World Industries Recycling Program, led by Anita Snader

November 2008

MACREDO held its annual meeting at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA on November 13-14, 2008. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) funded the event that covered a range of topics including organic material recovery, workplace recycling, and responsible electronic material recycling practices. In addition, MACREDO members shared information about their respective programs. The following presentations were given:

• District of Columbia Recycling -- William Easley and Russell Klein, DC Office of Recycling
• MACREDO Project Update -- Linda Knapp, Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR)
• Stop Trashing the Climate -- Brenda Platt, ILSR
• Workplace Recycling -- Kent Foerster, US EPA Headquarters
• Responsible Recycling (R2) Practices for Electronic Recyclers -- Dan Gallo, US EPA Region III

The event also included tours of three locations:

• The Two Particular Acres On-Farming Composting Activities, led by Ned Foley
• Moravian Court Earth Tub Pilot Project, University of Pennsylvania, led by Maurice Sampson
• Temple University Recycling Program, led by Marshall Budin
