Electronic Product Recovery
MACREDO Research and Outreach Project
The document, End-of-Life Computer and Electronics Recovery Options for the Mid-Atlantic States, Second Edition, March 2000, provides a summary of major technology and environmental policies regarding the recycling and reuse of obsolete computers and other electronic devices. It was specifically prepared for MACREDO members to provide assistance in long-term regional planning and policy initiatives.

MACREDO supports electronics recovery through ongoing outreach at workshops, conferences, and special events in the region. Interested organizations are encouraged to contact MACREDO for more information.
eCycling Partnership
eCycling is a collaboration among the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region III, the Mid-Atlantic States, and the electronics manufacturing industry to develop a long-term solution to the challenge of consumer electronic product recovery and recycling. The goals of eCycling are to:
- develop an economically and environmentally sustainable way to remove end-of-life computer equipment and televisions from the municipal waste stream;
- demonstrate the feasibility of a multi-state, government/industry recycling program.
The eCycling Team worked closely with local governments to launch the project in October 2001. During its first year, eCycling featured 45 collection events throughout the Mid-Atlantic states, and generated volume, data, and public participation that is helping to build the foundation of a national electronics recycling infrastructure.
Since project launch, eCycling has:
- collected more than 2,300 tons of electronic equipment;
- diverted more than 23,000 monitors and TVs from the waste stream;
- established a flexible regulatory system for the participating states;
- reached millions of residents through its multi-faceted outreach campaign that includes television commercials, utility bill inserts, the eCycling web page, brochures, press releases, and news articles.

Plug In-To eCycling Campaign
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Plug-In To eCycling Program is a national initiative that is working to develop more opportunities for citizens to recycle obsolete electronics and to increase awareness about the importance of electronics recycling. Plug-In to eCycling is a voluntary, shared responsibility program with participation from electronics manufacturers, retailers, recyclers, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. EPA launched the campaign in January, 2003.
